The series’s rarest gem is NOON WINE (September 8 at 7 pm), with brilliant performances by Olivia de Havilland, Per Oscarsson, and especially Jason Robards. Robards plays a dairy farmer who hires a troubled, laconic Swede as a hand and destroys himself in an attempt to defend his employee from a stranger who wishes him harm. One of the most emotional hours ever televised, Noon Wine turned out to be Peckinpah’s ticket back to Hollywood — so it has double value, both in itself and in where it led its director. It shouldn’t be missed.
