Basic Instinct 2

Silly fun for fans of the original

FROM KITCH TO SEX KITTEN: Basic Instinct 2It’s been 14 years since Sharon Stone uncrossed her legs in Basic Instinct. Getting the sequel delivered has meant lawsuits and much dithering over who will direct and co-star. The good news is that it’s just what you’d hope for if the original gave you a rise. Stone’s in fine form as author Catherine Tramell, who after getting off at 110 mph and crashing into the Thames is suspected of murdering a British football star. Her shrink, Michael Glass (David Morrissey), is the tormented snare du jour as the bodies and the voyeuristic fuck vignettes pile up. “The smell of her pussy makes you dizzy” is how Inspector Roy Washburn (David Thewlis) puts it. Silly, shock-pandering lines like that nearly sink the film to Showgirls level. Nonetheless, from kitsch to sex kitten, Stone owns the film, and director Michael Caton-Jones (Scandal) maintains a grave, seductive mood, even through the convoluted climax.

For 50 years, Alvin and the Chipmunks have been driving parents nuts with their helium-infused banter and shrill bastardizations of pop music.

If Rod Lurie's errant remake of Straw Dogs didn't tickle your morbid fear of home invasion, then perhaps the latest from Joel Schumacher ( Falling Down ) might do the job.
