Just when you thought filmmakers were out of ideas, Oscar-winning writer/director Tyler Perry marries the plots of The Big Chill and Boomerang with Couples Retreat humor and characters modeled after the Real Housewives of Atlanta. Like most of Perry’s treasures, Why Did I Get Married Too? seems to have been shot with no script and on a single take; the majority of dialogue overheard at your local mall’s food court is leagues more entertaining.
The protagonists — upper-class African-Americans who look phenomenal in casual white linen — are exaggeratedly two-dimensional (thanks largely to Saved by the Bell–caliber performances), capable of little more than love and affection or unrelenting fury. But that’s the best part about Tyler Perry’s tedious fantasy land.
But that’s the best part about Tyler Perry’s tedious fantasy land, where men are abusive and women are homicidal: even if (spoiler alert) you murder your husband in a fit of retaliatory rage, it’s only a matter of time before a hunky prince arrives on your doorstep in the form of Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson.
