“I love the relationship we have with this huge palette of choices before us,” McMicken allows. “But when it comes down to it, ‘Maxwell House coffee versus Folger’s coffee’ is as relevant a debate in my mind as ‘Led Zeppelin drum versus Radiohead vocal’ or something.” Whatever disparate bins Dr. Dog pull from to make their songs work so well, the secret ingredient is simple: a little sincerity can capture far more than 12 drum mics ever could.
“The more I’ve grown up,” McMicken concludes, “the more I’ve realized the slippery nature of honesty, and the dire, pressing need for it at all times in everything that you do. If you know deep down inside that you’re honestly doing what means the most to you, then any sort of expression, however stupid or referential it may be, is an original act.”
