LAKE CHAMPLAIN BLUEGRASS FESTIVAL | AUGUST 12 THROUGH 15 | Now in its ninth year, the festival brings bluegrass names like Cherryholmes, the Spinney Brothers, and the Bluegrass Gospel Project to the stage Thursday through Saturday. Sunday opens up to broader country styles, including Jamie Lee Thurston and Jimmy T and the Sleepy Hollow Boys.

FREIHOFFER JAZZ FESTIVAL | JUNE 26 AND 27 | Acts as diverse as Al Jarreau, Taj Mahal, and Gladys Knight headline the main stage of the 33rd annual festival at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center, which has both lawn and amphitheater seating. A second gazebo stage focuses on up-and-comers, like bassist Linda Oh and trumpeter Tomasz Stanko.

MONTREAL INTERNATIONAL JAZZ FESTIVAL | JUNE 25 THROUGH JULY 6 | More than 3000 musicians from more than 30 countries will gather in Montreal for the 31st edition of this festival, which stretches the definition of "jazz" to include Joan Armatrading and Steve Miller and the Doobie Brothers. And while 13 indoor venues are incorporated into the festival, many charging admission fees (such as the opening gala with Lionel Ritchie and Cassandra Wilson), 370 performances on the nine outdoor stages will offer free shows by the likes of the Brian Setzer Orchestra and New Orleans piano legend Allen Toussaint.

GREY FOX BLUEGRASS FESTIVAL | JULY 15 THROUGH 18 | On the edge of the Catskills Mountains, Grey Fox, the International Bluegrass Music Association's bluegrass event of the year, will be hosted this summer by the Dry Branch Fire Square, featuring Sam Bush. Davis Grisman, Kathy Mattea, Doyle Lawson, and Del McCoury join a full lineup on the multiple stages (including a learning tent for would-be pickers), and camping (available for 4000!) is free with a full-festival ticket.

CLASSICAL
MONADNOCK MUSIC | JULY 8 THROUGH AUGUST 27 | Founded in 1966, this festival now unites summer concerts across the Monadnock region, including many free and open-air events. Highlights include "Essential Concerti," bringing Mozart and Bach to Peterborough Town Hall; a three-concert chamber music series; and concerts dedicated to the American spiritual and to "Paris of the Senses," with music of Chausson, Debussy, Messaien, and more.

ROCKPORT CHAMBER MUSIC FESTIVAL | JUNE 10 THROUGH JULY 18 | Now in its 29th year, this Cape Ann festival has moved to its new Shalin Liu Performance Center. The series, which hosts such noted chamber groups as the Borromeo Quartet and Boston Musica Viva, includes open rehearsals, pre-concert lectures, and a free family concert.
