PHOENIX [Which Stage | Sunday, June 13 @ 7:15 p.m.]
For all of those in attendance who don't give a shit about Dave Matthews, Phoenix's sunset offering served as the perfect cap to a perfect weekend. Last year, they were relegated to a 45-minute tent set during über-headliner Phish's Friday-night slot, perhaps because the festival organizers didn't think the foreigners had enough buzz to warrant otherwise. But that was then. In case you don't listen to the radio, watch TV, or read blogs, Phoenix has blown the fuck up. Here, their set time was rightfully doubled, giving them the opportunity to run through a majority of the tracks from Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix, the album that has propelled them into the pop stratosphere. Admittedly, the set would've worked better at night, as the LED/strobe onslaught became increasingly more fascinating as the sun continued to dip. But it mattered not -- by the time they reprised "1901" for the third time during the encore, the crowd went absolutely batshit, hell-bent on burning up whatever energy they had left on that field.
