The duo who make up Cults have profited from having a dearth of info online. The three songs on their Bandcamp page sit alongside an album cover and the thinnest of details . . . and that's pretty much it.

Still, the way they've lit a flicker in the indie-rock press after so little activity has to make you wonder: why these guys and not the thousands of other acts lingering in obscurity? Cults 7", which came out in April, offers one answer: they sound as if they should have been popular ages ago, and the way they embrace nostalgia makes them feel new. Cults' trio of tracks is swelling, crooning '50s/'60s-bred pop from a bedroom project that time forgot.

"Go Outside" crystallizes youthful chants and sparkling glockenspiel with the optimistic imagery of a summer daydream. And yet, none of the material here is intriguing enough to justify the attention Cults have received. The most powerful moment is gone in a flash — the point in "The Curse" where singer Madeline Follin changes into a weepy doo-wop queen spilling soulful anguish against an organ in mourning. Otherwise, the cotton-candy pop is sweet but unsatisfying.

Present perfect
For some hip-hop heads, artists like Mickey Factz represent everything that reeks in rap. Between his bypassing the rugged underground, blowing up on-line, and occasionally kicking Kanye-esque arrogance, he's an easy target for so-called purists.

Injustice for all
Scott Sturgeon loses his train of thought a couple of times during this interview. He's loopy from jet lag — which is unavoidable after a 20-hour flight from New Zealand (halfway around the planet from his non-residency at a squatted apartment building in New York City), where he's just finished a tour with his claim-to-fame band, Leftover Crack.
Bleep the faith
If you were young and had brain space to spare in 1985, those vacant folds were likely soon flooded with the vast audial ephemera of the Nintendo era.
Japanimayhem
Japanese acts attempting to interface with Western audiences often do so from behind a veil of inscrutability. Never mind that Japanese artists emerge from an alternate J-rock history that seldom intersects with ours. Tokyo's enduring Polysics have bridged this gap by expressing themselves as plainly as possible: with screaming, bouncing, eyeball-popping pogo pop so spastic that it breaks the language barrier.
Mood swings
There’s nothing like getting socked in the head with a big fat metaphor — and if it’s carried along by some solid guitar playing, so much the better.
Ruse music
Not that they’d be the first band to pad their résumé in their one-sheet, but even by industry standards, Do Not Forsake Me Oh My Darling’s backstory tests the threshold of plausibility.
Contemporary retro
At what point does present-day genre saturation override a style's era of origin?
