Greene proves soft-spoken (well, sparing of type) in an e-mail interview; all he'll offer about "Medicine" is his annoyance that the line "fuckin' up my head" got censored out of my promo copy. But he does put his Dead work into perspective, pointing out that he wasn't any kind of Deadhead before getting the call from Lesh. "I was pretty freaked out when I first started. Phil was very comforting, though, he encouraged me to be myself. I just wanted to do the songs justice, because they really are great songs. It's a whole world of music that I wasn't familiar with. Now that I've been exposed, I'm soaking it all in and absorbing what I can."
For all that, he maintains that he's more comfortable as a songwriter than as a guitarslinger. "I have a good one here and there, but I'm not much of a guitar-solo guy."
