Shake 'n' bake

At the Milky Way in Jamaica Plain a few weeks ago, Lally's spasmodic guitar playing conveyed a sense of either impending doom or imminent ascension (mostly depending on the song), and his hand wandered over the neck as if in constant search of a new progression to carry his vocals. Carasco — dubbed by Lally as "something of a mythical creature" of the Allston scene — was as likely to maintain a Ringo backbeat as he was to belt out a crowd-wrenching Keith Moon fill. And the usually reserved, subdued Hestand seemed to swagger, her hands on her hips, her eyes roaming the room, as if challenging the audience. Their 35-minute set was a rarified enactment of innocence.

"This band is a fountain of youth," says Lally. "And not only will I do it, but I'm going to make it. I say that in complete confidence."
