The Morning After the Night Before was recorded in two different styles. Night Before is a "virtual" recording using an FTP site where the band downloaded and updated one another's efforts while producer Lee "Muddy" Baker served as moderator. Morning After was birthed by James as a unit after five overdubless days in the studio.

Both albums are trademark James — moody, uplifting, and at times spontaneously joyous, but with the natural undercurrent of Booth's lyrical melancholy and yearning. Like previous James releases, this one is a schizoid rock opus buoyed by Booth's unmistakable voice. As he explains it, "We named the band James because it's an individual, and my reading of an individual is having 20 personalities."
