"Yeah, I rarely go there," he says of confessional songs. "There's a lot on Medicine Show that's about the band — for instance, 'Armed with an Empty Gun' is about facing a showdown and wondering if you have the goods to back it up. But I'd rather be someone like Randy Newman — he doesn't put himself into his songs, but you can listen to them and know a lot about how he feels. Whether you want to or not, you're always going to creep into your characters."
