If Avoxblue's complex arrangements and six-minute epics make him sound more like a full-fledged underground synth-pop ensemble, that's probably because the tracks are repolished demos from his former project, the atmospheric-rock-leaning Fragile. But Jimmy Rossi Jr. — also the keyboardist/guitarist for wall-of-sound psych veterans the December Sound — knows his way around complex electronic compositions. By weaving an elusive, almost-searing dark-pop sound rooted in new wave's sheen, he bridges overdubs, loops, and thickened boot-stomping, beat-based rhythms into songs that have allowed him to share the stage with the likes of Glasser, Twin Sister, and Memoryhouse. In live Avoxblue performances, half the music is recorded; the rest, including his vocals, is live. "I still want to make it interactive," he explains.
