Guest lists 2010: Phoenix critics weigh in on the year in music

What consensus?
By PHOENIX MUSIC STAFF  |  December 21, 2010

Ryan Stewart
1 (tie). Twin Sister, “All Around and Away We Go”/”Lady Daydream” (both from Color Your Life)
2. Joanna Newsom, Have One On Me
3. No Age, “Glitter” (from Everything In Between)
4. Beach House, Teen Dream
5. Fucked Up, “Year of the Ox” (single)
6. Deerhunter, Halcyon Digest
7. Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti, “Round and Round” (from Before Today)
8. LCD Soundsystem, This Is Happening
9. Zola Jesus, “Night” (from Stridulum)
10. The National, High Violet

Welp, I couldn’t decide whether to do a “Best Albums” list or a “Best Tracks” list because I didn’t feel strongly about my choices on either after somewhere around six or seven, so I elected to squish the two together. The alternating pattern is arbitrary, although it is true that I like those two Twin Sister songs better than anything else I heard this year. For a new-ish band to have that level of confidence and songwriting acumen is just damn impressive; can’t wait for their eventual full-length. Meanwhile, my top album, Have One On Me, earns its spot based on its staying power; nine months after its release, and I’m still learning new things about it. Considering how I get bored with most new albums after two or three playthroughs these days (and based on conversations and things I’ve read, I’m not alone), that is a real achievement.
