Stars
At just 23 years old, Ty Segall is on his fifth LP, and that's not counting more than a dozen releases with Sic Alps and
his four other bands. But
Goodbye Bread
— his first record for Drag City, in which he plays every instrument — is his most scrupulous work to date. Formerly known for fast, blown-out garage punk, the San Francisco native here takes his usual punky, fuzz-laden backdrop and mellows it out, assuming the role of a Bob Dylan/Neil Young–inspired songwriter instead.
Goodbye
starts with the creeping, bare-bone title track's simple distorted riffs, thoughtful lyrics, and echoing falsetto flecks, leading to the first of many psyched-out guitar solos at around the two-minute mark. The record's best tracks range from the bluesy, lovesick "You Make the Sun Fry" ("Oh won't you take me to the hill?/ Put me in that Coupe de Ville/ And tell me that you that you love me still") to the extra-psychedelic, Lennon-reminiscent "I Am with You." Ultimately, though, all 10 are some of his best to date, and all are potential singles. Segall spent six months writing and recording
Goodbye
— his longest investment in a record yet. The time spent soaking in the classics has paid off.

O'Death embark on another folk-punk chapter
It must be a relief to realize that when you hit the stage, people know what they're going to get. O'Death have spent the past several years banging out a reputation as grizzled folk punks who run their sets like moonshine raids.
Out: The Chris North Dream Quartet help christen the Haven in Jamaica Plain
With the Chris North Dream Quartet, singer/guitarist Chris North Alspach retains the sincere Celt-folk vocal inflection and distinctly New England–influenced lyrics of his other, Best Music Poll–nominated band, the Points North.
Joyride
It is May 1966, in the Prelude Club in Harlem, an Atlantic Records release party.
Julian Lynch | Terra
Although experimentation in music nowadays is certainly in vogue, there aren't many records that will straddle the line between commercial plausibility and healthy art-for-art's-sake like Julian Lynch's Terra.
From afar, Destry bring vintage allure to Boston
When Destry's Michelle DaRosa tells me she grew up watching musicals excessively, I find myself listening to her singing voice just to see what type of musical heroine she'd be.
Kode9 and the Spaceape | Black Sun
Kode9 is the most important electronic artist of the past five years.
Greg Dulli keeps his peace in the Twilight Singers
One of the most widely circulated Afghan Whigs bootlegs, from our own Paradise in May 1994, has the iconic alt-rock foursome busting out a loose and rollicking version of New Order's "Regret."
Shinji Masuko | Woven Music
It's tempting to point to the recent tsunami in Japan as having a heavy cosmic connection with Shinji Masuko's first solo record, a full-immersion blackout of churning, oceanic drones and melodic eddies.
Beastie Boys | Hot Sauce Committee Part Two
"Back on the mic, it's the anti-depressor," flows King Ad-Rock over raunchy drums and speaker-busting clavinet in "Make Some Noise," the bravado launching pad of Beastie Boys' eighth studio album.
Pantha du Prince | XI Versions of Black Noise
Outright blandness is the worst sin in all of art.
Zion I & the Grouch | Heroes In the Healing of the Nation
The only category Bay Area MCs Zumbi (of Zion I) and the Grouch (of Living Legends) squeeze neatly into is "Decisively West Coast," what with their nonchalant pre-swagger and hella dope lingo.

EQUAL EXCHANGE FINDS A NEW WAY TO SELL ITS JOE ON THE GO
| May 31, 2012
For mid-afternoon ice-coffee pick-me-ups this summer, Bostonians frequenting the Rose Kennedy Greenway, Copley Square, and Charles Street/Massachusetts General Hospital neighborhoods need not head to Starbucks. Instead, they can look for mini-cafés on wheels, carted around by local coffee company Equal Exchange — on oversize tricycles.
