A slice of area hip-hop's diverse scene — from hardcore boom-bap to frat rap
>> MEET: 3rddy Baby's video director, Ju Santana <<
• 3rddy Baby lived a comfortable life until he was three years old. Up to that point, his parents were young professionals in the Dominican Republic. And then one day a faulty gas generator malfunctioned, rupturing in its tank, and sparking a blaze big enough to engulf him in its flames, changing his life forever.
"My parents flew me to a hospital in Texas that specializes in treating severe burns in children," Almanzar said. "Then we lived in New York for a while, but we were like nomads. When we moved to Massachusetts, I lived in Boston, Revere, Lynn, Chelsea, all over the place for my treatment."
It wasn't until they got to Somerville that 3rddy found a steady group of friends, as his father rose to become the director of Somerville Community Youth Programs. In the past, 3rddy may have embarrassed his prominent dad by showing up in the crime blotter, but now his pops can brag that his son's highly literal debut single, "I'm On Fire," has clocked more than 150,000 views online.
