Doomriders continue their forward march

With an already full-plate, Newton in 2011 also reunited with his pre-Converge band Jesuit, a Virginia Beach hardcore act that released two forward-thinking EPs in the late '90s and counted former Dillinger Escape Plan guitarist Brian Benoit among its members. Although Jesuit played only two shows in support of their re-mastered discography — one at Santos Party House in New York in April and a final set at Richmond VA's Best Friend's Day festival in August — Newton was blown away by the reception and felt the band "played better than we ever did when we were together." There were hard feelings in the wake of Jesuit's 1999 dissolution, and the reunion allowed the band to "put the thing to bed and quash all the bad feelings that were there so now we're all happy and we're all friends again, and I think that's all we really wanted."

Converge is currently taking a break from the road to work on their follow-up to Axe to Fall, so Newton's looking forward to new Doomriders material and a short Scandinavian tour with Norwegian hardcore punk band Kvelertak in November. "Now that all of our schedules are sort of clear [the next full-length] is the main objective," Newton says. "We've actually got quite a bit for ideas, we just gotta sit down and work 'em all out, and now everybody's finally got the time."
