Of course, for a band like Mastodon, "simplify" is still pretty dizzying by any other yardstick. From the lightning fwap of "Blasteroid" to the unhinged scree of lead single "Curl of the Burl" to the space-rock heft of the mind-frying "Stargasm," The Hunter is a lean, mean Mastodon, freed from the conceptual weight of previous outings and content to cram as much rock as they can into three minutes. "We believe that our band is multi-dimensional, and the vibe that we present is a direct reflection of what's going on in our personal lives," Sanders says. "So if it comes across as super triumphant and positive and even humorous, that is a direct reflection on the four of us and the unique chemistry that has become Mastodon. It's not a facade, we're not trying to be all, 'We're all evil and tough,' or any of that bullshit. That's not who we are or who we're meant to be."
