Deep tracks and minutiae for music lovers, rich and poor

Box-set match

U2 | ACHTUNG BABY [20TH ANNIVERSARY UBER DELUXE EDITION] (Island, $589.99, 2 LPs, 5 vinyl singles, 6 CDs, 4 DVDs) |If you can even find a used-CD store nowadays, you can probably snag an Achtung Baby digipak for less than the cost of a McRib - and a pristine Zooropa for even less, which knocks out the first two discs of this redefining-the-word-exhaustive set. Which means that the remaining $580 worth of value is ostensibly aimed at the most completist of completists. For slightly less than six bills, you should be able to get Bono and the gang to sing these songs to you in the shower, pretty much — my guess is that in a year’s time, this thing will be mostly used as an uber-deluxe paperweight, keeping a stack of past-due credit-card warnings from blowing around a drafty living room.

If rock and roll is three chords and the truth, then the mutant genre offspring shoegaze can be summed up as one chord, three fuzzboxes, and a sullen, muttered bleat.
