2011 goes pop

TYLER, THE CREATOR, "YONKERS" | CHRIS BROWN, "LOOK AT ME NOW" | What would music culture be without the bad guys — whether it's the young whipper-snappers like Tyler and his Odd Future crew, or pop/rap's bogeyman, Chris Brown, the man you love to hate to love. Odd Future somehow emerged as more loathsome — partly because of their music's casually hate-filled nihilism vs. Breezy's eager-to-please-y crackle. But the effervescent charm of Odd Future's tracks dissipates the second the song ends. Chris Brown (we can't forgive him for his horrible misdeeds) keeps cranking tracks like "L.A.M.N.," roof-blowers that hit you first with disappointment that the kid is back and still has it, followed by a snap-click bounce that makes you forget why you despise him in the first place.
