LISTEN ON SPOTIFY: Best of 2011: Sam Ueda's Picks | All Boston Phoenix Top Tracks of 2011
To me, 2011 was the year that everyone started getting really sick of microgenres (dare I say... chillwave is dead?) and bands went back to making amazing pop songs again, which is literally the only thing I want in life, ever. I wasn't looking for anything specific for this list, though. I was going to do an entire list of debuts after Sneeze, Water Moccasins and Yuck really had me going, but to be honest, I just finished all my finals and want to curl up next to a beer and let my mind decompose, so I went with my gut feeling on these. Spending a summer in Allston really wore off on me too, and I wish I could have included all of the amazing stuff that came from Rat City, but Brooklyn, Seattle, LA, and my very own Dover, New Hampshire called to remind me that the timeless music hotspots are still hot (Dover's still working on it). 2011 was great, but if bands are planning for the apocalypse for next year, let's hope the impending gimmick of ridiculous anthemic "world-ending" pop songs will give us something to laugh about.
