In that regard, Berne found Mitchell key to the process. "He's kind of like the concert master in this band. In the written music, he's playing almost every part, all the time." Berne estimates that about 40 percent of the record is written, but, he adds, "To me, it's a compliment if people can't figure out what's written and what's not.
