The title of the new record is partially an ode to Van Etten's period of flux and partially an homage to comedians like Charlie Chaplin. It also probes at the sexist double-standard behind the word itself: Van Etten points out that it's an endearing term toward men, but derogatory toward women. "There's so many meanings behind it," she says. "That's how I wanted to represent the record, because it has many levels and comes from a lot of different places and a lot of different times."
