As she was growing up in the '70s, McGarry says she felt empowered by these singers. "Some of the choices they were making were really inspiring, things I never got from role models growing up. It was really through listening to them and feeling that there's another way."

Growing up in a family of 10 kids in Hyannis, McGarry says that music "was a way to find an identity." One of the things that hit her early on was that "this music is big enough to fit any emotion I've got. Any crazy emotion I've got can find a place in this music."
