With a plan of releasing a series of EPs, Velah's first disc arrives in time for this weekend's Deep Heaven Now V. Festival organizer Jinsen Liu booked Static of the Gods at two previous Deep Heaven Nows, and will enlist a still-relatively-young Velah for Saturday's slate at Precinct, which also falls on Johnson's birthday. "Anything Jen Johnson touches will always be great," writes Liu in an email. "Velah is basically a more lush and shoegazed-out version of Static of the Gods. When that band ended, Jen was worried, but I assured her that everything happens for the best and that she'll do great at whatever the next thing she does."

Velah's appearance at Deep Heaven — a bi-annual, two-day, two-venue, 25-band showcase of ambient and psychedelic rock and roll — will provide the stage for only the second Velah show ever. The debut came in March at the Cambridge Elks Lodge. "I was so overcome with emotion my first show," Johnson says. "I forgot what a fucking awesome feeling it is to play live, loud music." ^
