Best Coast multi-instrumentalist and right-hand-man Bobb Bruno agrees that while The Only Place might be a curveball, multiple listens reveal someone really searching. "There is just an emotional weight to some of the songs," says Bruno over the phone from California. "I could definitely feel what Bethany was going through — even more so than when the things she was singing about were happening."
Cosentino herself isn't going to second-guess whether she's real or not. "I had a therapy session with myself and wrote this record," she e-mails. "I realized it doesn't matter. At the end of the day, I have to make myself happy and create something that sounds good to me. This record makes me really proud."
