From Stray Birds to Mighty Good Boys

Last call for the sonic mayhem of HANK SINATRA JR., ELECTRIC EEL SHOCK, and NYC's PEELANDER-Z at Firehouse 13 (401.270.1801) on THURSDAY (the 11th), priming the palate for another steady weekend of live action. Get on board with this triple-dip on FRIDAY (the 12th) at the PVD Social Club (401.454.7177), where Bill Keough's GALVANIZE joins forces with fellow 75orLess Records reps COMA COMA and LLOYD'S LLAMAS (members of the Masons and Medicine Ball). Meanwhile, DYLAN LAGAMMA (NY) lays down some jazz at the Apartment (all-ages, 401.228.7222), or get down with swing-boogie crew EIGHT TO THE BAR at the Knickerbocker Café in Westerly (401.315.7070). SATURDAY (the 13th) highlights include MINOR X and Tool tribute band OPIATE performing at the Ocean Mist (401.782.3740); Stone Soup Coffeehouse in Pawtucket (401.921.5115) hosts blues-guitar legend PAUL GEREMIA with HILARY HAWKE opening; Americana-folk acoustic trio THE STRAY BIRDS (PA) play the Roots Café (401.272.7422), and jam band mavens MAX CREEK hit the Met for an all-ages tilt ($15, 401.729.1005). On SUNDAY (the 14th), the SUPERCHIEF TRIO will entertain the suppertime crowd at the Narragansett Café starting around 5 pm (401.423.2150). Optional face-melters for your WEDNESDAY (the 17th) with WOLFSBANE BLUES, VIVA LE VOX, THE MIGHTY GOOD BOYS, and JOE BUCK YOURSELF (best band name ever?) visit KC's Tap (21+, 401.722.0150); and don't forget the weekly METAL NIGHT at Dusk (401.714.0444), with NOCUOUS, OBSIDIAN TONGUE, and SORCERY slated to shred this Wednesday. An early heads-up for next THURSDAY (the 18th), with the DENNIS MCCARTHY BAND jamming at Nick-a-Nee's (401.861.7290) while VUDU SISTER, DAN BLAKESLEE, and WILL H (Haunt the House) perform at the Salon; 21+ and just $3 at the door (401.865.6330).

The new EP by PVD trio Gertrude Atherton, Isle of Lost Skulls , is a gnarled beauty of a debut and proves to be well worth the wait. I have been eagerly anticipating this record since catching drummer Melanie Fuest, singer/guitarist Shannon Le Corre, and bassist Nicole Lagace in action a dozen or so times over the past year.
