Feeling the pain

By CHRIS CONTI  |  May 1, 2013

McCurdy's background bleeds onto his notepad, with family members and close friends having dealt with substance abuse issues over the years, as evidenced on the first two tracks, "Revival" ("No one's gonna save you now," he howls) and "Kid Heroine." His adoration of Thurston Moore is present on the six-minute jam "Loverboy" (co-written with Garzone). "I got no time for disappointment/I got no time to waste on you/I got no time to save myself, and everything I do," McCurdy sneers on "Got No Time." But it's the one-two punch of "Buffalo, NY" and "Daisies" that has me crowing about this album. The former is the lone acoustic track and could easily fit onto Alice in Chains' Jar of Flies, while "Daisies" is a stoned, smoldering groove summoning early Butthole Surfers, and reason alone to pick up Household Items ASAP. Rock on, Mr. McCurdy.
