F*ck Wit Dre Day

Music seen, February 17, at the Big Easy

You’ve heard of tribute bands, but have you heard of tribute DJs? It was all Dr Dre, all night, at the Big Easy on February 17. DJ Boondocks and retail sponsor extraordinaire Cream teamed up to throw one hell of a party in complete West Coast fashion, with a smoking grill and a chromed-out bike on stage for props. Listening to tracks from the early days of NWA to The Chronic, and everything in between, the incredibly packed house was full of sweaty dancing bodies, and even my anti-misogynistic self was singing along to “Bitches Ain’t Shit.” How could I allow this to happen? All that early ’90s Dre brought us back to a time in our rebellious youth when we were a little more ignorant of the words we sang along to, when we were loyal to our CDs full of “gangsta rap” that politicians were collecting and bulldozing. People were dressing the part too. There was Raiders gear, a lot of solid black from head to toe, and even a fake teardrop tattoo. The lucky ones who made it early were donning the fabulous door prizes — custom, silk-screened Dr Dre and Snoop Dogg bandannas. Keep your eyes peeled for more theme parties in the near future including dedications to J Dilla and Nas.
