Portland scene report: June 22, 2007

Sibilance starts now

Folks watching the Sox game on Thursday the 14th heard a take from the SMALL BOY PETES, during a highlight montage. The Petes, featuring Peter Grenier, Carrie Grenier, Ken Janson, and Al Smith, reside in Old Orchard Beach and released The Neighborhood in 2006. Apparently, there’s some kind of familiar connection with the NESN broadcast team, but it’s still a cool spot to find a Maine band.

At the SPACE GALLERY benefit at SPACE Saturday — not as well attended as it should have been — EMILIA DAHLIN charmed the pants off people with a cover of “Itsy Bitsy Spider” that had extra verses like candy. The TOUGHCATS didn’t play any kids' songs, but they did promote their Deerhoof Milk Man Ballet DVD, performed by elementary school kids, and rip plenty of banjo-drum-steel guitar non-bluegrassness. Emilia’s got some news, too. She just got back from the NXNE festival in Toronto and the Mountain Stage New Song Contest chose her “Loneliness Is...” for the regional finals at Club Passim in Boston, July 8 (JASON SPOONER, another local songster, also will perform).

We’ve got a new release-show date for SCOTT LINK’s Coming Around: July 13 at the White Heart, when the former Diesel Doug more formally enters his solo career.

AS FAST AS’s “Special” has recently been added to WCYY, though the song’s been available for about a year on the second Open Letter to the Damned disc. This, and last weekend’s big show with PETE KILPATRICK, could signal a renewed focus on developing the Portland fanbase for a band that have been out of town a lot over the last year.

Be on the lookout for DRAY SENIOR, an MC who recently moved back to town and is touting himself heavily. His most recent disc, The Lost Empire, is available at Toni’s Touch, on Forest Ave.
