Shaken, stirring

Herb Alpert gets remixed
By ADAM GOLD  |  February 28, 2006

Herb AlpertIf it ain’t broke, don’t remix it — or so the saying should go. Messing with an album as time-tested as Whipped Cream & Other Delights is risky business. But in the right hands, even this lounge classic can stand to be shaken. Rewhipped won’t be in stores until Tuesday, but iTunes is already previewing its many delights.

Herb Alpert’s Tijuana Brass,“Butterball” (Anthony Marinelli remix) | Of all the remixes, this sounds the least like its kitschy New Orleans–shuffle counterpart. TV/film composer Anthony Marinelli takes it down a notch with a lazy hip-hop beat, mellow Rhodes and piano chords, and layers of airy trumpet fills.

Herb Alpert’s Tijuana Brass,“Tangerine” (DJ Foosh remix) | The German-born turntablist spins the melody of the ’40s Mercer standard over a chill, reverb-heavy house beat. Nothing really changes, but isn’t that true of most house beats?

Herb Alpert’s Tijuana Brass,“Lemon Tree” (Thievery Corporation remix) | Always masters of the exotic beat, electronica duo Rob Garza and Eric Hilton provide a haunting, Middle Eastern—tinged backdrop for a serenading mariachi horn line.

Herb Alpert’s Tijuana Brass,“Lollipops and Roses” (Anthony Marinelli remix) | Marinelli swaps out the big-band-swing feel for a funky clav riff straight out of Stevie Wonder’s “Superstition.” Echoes of the soundtrack to any health-education video made between 1968 and 1974.
