Stars
Queen Latifah is never going to be Billie Holiday or even Macy Gray, but 2004’s surprise hit,
The Dana Owens Album
, proved she had a set of pipes.
Trav’lin Light
, her second set of standards and first recording for Verve, vindicates the rapper-turned-actress-turned-diva from any lingering charges of crossover pandering; she’s obviously as serious about this as any of her other pursuits. Abetted by a small army of producers and support players, Latifah croons her way through tunes by Antonio Carlos Jobim, Nina Simone, Peggy Lee, and the Pointer Sisters respectfully, enthusiastically, and competently, albeit not particularly distinctively. Stevie Wonder’s harmonica on “Georgia Rose” is so immediately identifiable that it threatens to steal the vocalist’s thunder, and Latifah’s foray into Motown territory, Smokey Robinson’s “What Love Has Joined Together,” would have been a buried Tammi Terrell B-side had Latifah been working for Berry Gordy. But her blues is formidable on Simone’s “I Want a Little Sugar in My Bowl,” she swings like crazy on the Sarah Vaughan vehicle “I’m Gonna Live Till I Die,” and the über-production of the Impressions’ “Gone Away” justifies the Queen-sized vocal Latifah brings to it.

Abram Wilson
Young New Orleans trumpeter Abram Wilson sorts out his mixed feelings about his heritage in this suite of original pieces for Delta blues trio.
Koko Taylor
The title here is befits the kind of shouting, romping music this grand madam of the blues began performing roughly a half-century ago.
The power of two
Marco Benevento started out like most Berklee pianists, shedding Bill Evans and Keith Jarrett solos and scrounging for side gigs.
Spring leaves
The provocative tripleheader bill “What Is Jazz?” was originally put together by the ropeadope label for a showcase of its roster at Tonic in New York: the Christian McBride Band , the Charlie Hunter Trio , and DJ Logic and Bobby Previte .
Bring on the blues
There’s lots of music in store just around the proverbial corner for local music aficionados.
Basia Bulat | Heart Of My Own
Like a Laurel Canyon Billie Holiday or a pixilated Tracy Chapman, Bulat sports a voice rich with vibrato, hearty oomph, and dignified lonesomeness.
The Last Holiday
Queen Latifah has the Alec Guinness role as a quietly desperate type with a terminal prognosis in this remake of the 1950 romantic comedy.
Tales from the ’hood
From the beat of the first hand-slapped tambourine, you know who you’re listening to.
Maria Muldaur
Forget about the camel already — there’s so much more to Maria Muldaur than “Midnight at the Oasis.”
Nights on the town
By now, the bossa nova of Antonio Carlos Jobim has been completely ingrained in the language of jazz and pop.
