MOSHE and his MILLED PAVEMENT label have been busy RINGING IN THE NEW YEAR. THE BIGGEST NEWS IS THAT BRICK.CITY.MEDIA, THE LABEL RUN BY JASON HJORT (performing as J.HJORT), has joined MP and will now operate as the label’s electronic/dance imprint (this seems to be the logical extension of the work the pair have been doing over atWWW.WEPUSHBUTTONS.COM). The beats.on.the.rocks local electronic compilation series will continue in 2008, and b.c.m has plans for singles from j.hjort, THE SECRET WEEKEND, C MONEY BURNS, METRIS, VIK44, and LATE NIGHT CLOUDS PROJECT as well. Additionally, Moshe and j.hjort (who amusingly call themselves their labels' CEOs) will release their first collaboration, Eardrum Pornography, which is being billed as a fusion of the two labels’ sounds. Also on the Milled Pavement front, the Goose Bumps compilation has been released, featuring 29 tracks available as part of two download-only albums available now at the Milled Pavement site. The compilation is indicative of Milled Pavement’s growing reach, as artists are included from 10 states and seven countries. The release is being called the label’s “most genre-bending experience to date” as “dub and instrumental ambient density marry up with crunk-hop and downtempo intensity” (which rhymes).
Speaking of busy labels, MCKEENSTREET MUSIC, home to GRAEME K., HORSE THIEF, BRENDA, and other indie types, has recently relocated its home base to Olympia, Washington, but assures the “Sibilance” staff that “we’re still, and always will be, committed to putting out Maine artists.” It seems Washington has a good support structure for small businesses, is cheap, and is home to other like-minded labels like KILL ROCK STARS, with whom Mckeenstreet is friendly. Anyway, look for the following in the not-too-distant future (maybe February?): I Will Look at the Slicer, by Brenda (featuring CULT MAZE’s JAY LOBLEY and JOSH LORING and Graeme K.); Version Integrale, a reissue of Graeme’s first 1997 full-length, along with a new effort, which has yet to be named, Hidden Beast; and Objectif Lune, a reissue of the SUPERKIDS’ disc; along with a few others.
