Calling for back-up

By CHRIS FARAONE  |  May 12, 2008

Because of an endless (almost 20 years now) INS investigation in which the federal government is seeking to deport him to his native England (the matter is compounded by a five-year prison term he did for attempted murder involving a shooting outside a club), Rick would not comment for this article — or on any of the last three occasions that I’ve tried to contact him. The closest I’ve come was at Who’s on First on Yawkey Way after the Peace 2007 Hip-Hop Festival at City Hall Plaza, which Rick headlined with no back-up band at all. Searching for something to say other than “Can I take a picture with you and all your chains,” I went the second-corniest route: “I saw that show you did with Audible Mainframe — I know those dudes — that’s awesome that you’re doing a bunch more shows with them.” Rick responded the only way he knows how — slickly. “It’s been a while now since I’ve played without any of those guys,” he said, his gilded smile half-shining. “Did I do all right out there on my own today?”
