CAROLINA LIAR, COMING TO TERMS
" alt="photo of 'CAROLINA LIAR, COMING TO TERMS'">

Great story here: no-name songwriter from South Carolina moves to LA to make it big and somehow scores an internship with pro schlockmeister Diane Warren, who tells him his stuff would fare better in Europe; dude decamps to Sweden and ends up housesitting for a friend of tween-rock maestro Max Martin, who eventually co-writes and produces much of
Coming to Terms
, Chad Wolf’s debut as Carolina Liar. Opener “I’m Not Over” you’ve heard on
The Hills
— it’s the best boy version yet of “Since U Been Gone” (arguably Martin’s great accomplishment). The rest of
Coming to Terms
doesn’t quite live up to the promise Wolf displays in the single; if something else were as good (or better), they’d have put it first, right? That said, there are highlights for sure, among them the ace Killers impression “Last Night” (in which Wolf asks some chick at the bar, “Did you come up to me so your night would be cheaper?”) and “Something To Die For,” a goth-grunge goodie Wolf wrote with Peter Svensson of the Cardigans. Highly recommended to those unafraid of late-period Bon Jovi.

Mystery mix
"I get bored easily," says Pink. "I like being a big mystery bag. It confuses some people, but it works for me.”
The Sounds
The lanky fashion plates in this likable Swedish combo like to play up their punk pedigree in publicity photos.
Chairmen of the boards
Not unlike Swedish, Tagalog, and Esperanto, music is a language, with its own conjugations and (lewdly) dangling participles.
Lavigne squeaks; Winehouse freaks; Oasis leaks
Courtney Love and Avril Lavigne both have laryngitis this week. Explain that, Richard Dawkins.
Review: Anvil! The Story of Anvil
In 1984, the cocky Canadian rockers shared stages with Whitesnake and Bon Jovi, only to fade into total obscurity as other up-and-coming metal acts copped their chops and steamrolled past.
The Big Hurt: ''Losing'' news in brief
AEROSMITH ’s disastrous summer of canceled tours and geriatric folly has taken its toll on guitarist Joe Perry, who recently told MTV that the band were on “indefinite hiatus” — which is music-industry slang for “I hate Steven Tyler.”
Hiss and Chambers
The band are an unlikely but ultimately logical choice for local popularity.
Never poor in spirit
The prospect of New England gospel-soul singer Mighty Sam McClain recording a duet with Jon Bon Jovi or performing onstage with Natalie Merchant seems improbable.
Polvo give it another go
The North Carolina quartet’s noisy sound was music to a select group of ears.
Kelly Clarkson | All I Ever Wanted
Of all of the myths propagated in rock and roll, "it's the singer not the song" must be the most disingenuous.
The Cinematics
Despite the title of their debut album, it’s unlikely that there was anything particularly strange about the Cinematics’ education.

DEVO | SOMETHING FOR EVERYBODY

Given the theory of de-evolution these Ohio brainiacs began expounding more than 30 years ago, it makes a sad kind of sense that Devo's first album since 1990's Smooth Noodle Maps offers such a charmless, base-level version of the band's synth-addled new wave.

When Taio Cruz sings, "I can't live without you," in "Take Me Back," pop-song conventions tell us he's referring to a lover.
