Megaphone
is my favorite murder-free rap album since Talib Kweli & Hi-Tek’s
Train of Thought
. Titanic words those are, but despite bumping it every day for the past two months I’m still drawn to Headnodic’s infinitely woven rhythms and Project Move MC Moe Pope’s miraculously gritty parables. Tracks are rarely more convincing than the orchestral feats of “Durty,” the drum-spun boom-bap summer-afternoon-with-the-hydrant-cranked-open “Drop,” and “Happiness,” on which Moe rhymes: “I’m a spit until I catch that deal/So I can feed my child, fuck a rim on a wheel.”
Megaphone
marks a Boston reunion of sorts, with Moe and Headnodic both having jammed in the late-’90s organic house-party outfit Mission. But though they haven’t seen much of each other over the past eight years (Headnodic lives in the Bay Area, where he plays bass in the Crown City Rockers), it’s clear that they’ve remained creatively connected enough to collaborate on a project that could be dubbed a modern classic if it rises through the cloud of mediocre discs congesting this quarter’s rap-release schedule.

What happened to the label that made college kids feel good about hip-hop in an era when gangstas ruled the streets?

Talib Kweli
Ear Drum doesn’t reach the highs of that far more ambitious and sprawling album, but it’s a welcome return to form.
Dilated Peoples
Since signing with Capitol in 2000, this LA rap trio have been praised and criticized as a powerful underground phenomenon that mainstream hip-hop fans largely ignore.
Peanut Butter Wolf Presents 2K8: B-Ball Zombie War
Stones Throw’s latest label comp, 2K8 , celebrates the indie hip-hop imprint’s deal with 2K8 Sports, who put out all those 2K video games for Xbox and PlayStation.
Still nasty
“I think a lot of our music got overshadowed by the girls,” says legendary DJ Mr. Mixx of 2 Live Crew.
Rapping in the dark
Spotlights are for flashy rappers. Joe Budden prefers to spit in the dark.
Hip-hop history
“The thing that’s most gratifying to me is that the artists themselves like it and respect it, ’cause I’m trying to tell their story,” says Brian Coleman.
Can't be bought
It’s already given critics who don’t usually have much to say about hip-hop license to wax poetic over, you know, the skillz and shit of Brooklyn rapper Tim Fite.
Reconstruction project
Twenty-five-year-old Javon Townes (a/k/a JV Darapsinga) shows up for interviews as if he were about to hit the stage — as if he were expecting someone to call with a gig any minute.
Berklee beatz

You squint through the peephole: your expected visitor appears trustworthy enough, with a tech-chic denim-and-boots look. It's not like he's up to anything too sketchy — just trying to match you with a weed vaporizer fit for your lifestyle — so you invite him in and offer a seat.
