LINDSEY BUCKINGHAM, GIFT OF SCREWS

Stars
Midway through his follow-up to 2006’s
Under the Skin
, Lindsey Buckingham drops a gallop-grooved melody bomb called “The Right Place To Fade” that can’t help conjuring fond memories of Fleetwood Mac’s “Second Hand News.” “Right Place” is precisely the kind of big pop tune Buckingham avoided putting on the experimental
Skin
(which at points could’ve passed for a Sufjan Stevens disc), so there’s a temptation to consider
Gift of Screws
that album’s more streamlined counterpart. It isn’t quite: opener “Great Day” and “Time Precious Time” are built around weird Fahey-flavored acoustic-guitar figures; Buckingham sings “Did You Miss Me” in a whispery croak that shades the song’s sunny beat with menace; and the romantic promise in “I Wanna Wait for You” is undermined by talk of tarantulas and suicide. The great thing about Buckingham, of course, is that even his experiments are catchy (consider “Never Going Back Again”), and this ensures that
Screws
doesn’t buckle under the weight of his pop-savant ambition.
Rumours
earned him more capital than he can spend, but he’s running up an impressive bill anyway.

Lindsey Buckingham
Much of the critical reaction to the first solo album by Lindsey Buckingham in more than a decade has been prompted by the sense that Under the Skin could’ve been made by one of today’s overabundant indie-folk acts.
Rock therapies
A little over four years ago, the Boston music scene lost one of its cuter couples when singer-songwriter Blake Hazard and guitarist/producer John Dragonetti left town for LA.
A voice from on high
On his new album The Crying Light, Antony Hegarty lifts his voice without raising it.
Neko Case | Middle Cyclone
Middle Cyclone is Neko Case's most fearless and arresting record, ruthlessly composed and beautifully recorded.
Heavenly host
Perhaps it's due to the delicate gentility of his demeanor, or the soft warble of his signature trill, but Antony Hegarty tends to be described in the airiest of terms.

Chick Corea and John McLaughlin | Five Peace Band Live
Chick Corea and John McLaughlin first encountered each other in Miles Davis's group in the late '60s before taking his electric-jazz lessons and going on to invent fusion with Return to Forever (Corea) and the Mahavishnu Orchestra (McLaughlin).

Swallow says that when he first picked up an electric bass, "My immediate impression was: 'Oh, shit! I'm in deep trouble here!' "
Local color
It's become a commonplace to say that "indie" is too vague to mean anything useful, but that's not actually true.

DEVO | SOMETHING FOR EVERYBODY

Given the theory of de-evolution these Ohio brainiacs began expounding more than 30 years ago, it makes a sad kind of sense that Devo's first album since 1990's Smooth Noodle Maps offers such a charmless, base-level version of the band's synth-addled new wave.

When Taio Cruz sings, "I can't live without you," in "Take Me Back," pop-song conventions tell us he's referring to a lover.
