Clipping coupons

Collect and save: Editors, Mylo, and Skeletons and the Girl-Faced Boys

EditorsSometimes labels mess up and give away the best song on a band’s album as a free download. The idea is to entice; the reality is the new equivalent of clipping coupons. Here are a few worth clipping . . .

Editors, “Munich” (mp3) | Is this a shameless biting of Interpol’s shameless biting of Joy Division? Yes. Does that mean it’s not a stunning track? Not at all. In fact, the English quartet seem to have out-gloomed the NYC NME darlings, with more ferocity and feeling packed into this single than Interpol’s entire sophomore CD.

Skeletons & the Girl-Faced Boys, “Fit Black Man” (mp3) | Lame band name aside, this gaunt Ohio collective can lay it down, their sound approximating what Black Dice would sound like if they still knew what a hook is.

Mylo, “Doctor Pressure” (mp3) | Look, Ma! It’s one of those mash-’em-ups everyone’s been talking about on the Interweb! Blending Mylo’s year-old dance hit “Drop the Pressure” with Miami Sound Machine’s “Doctor Beat” sounds like a pretty dodgy proposition on paper, but recorded it may even surpass the original.

Kasai Allstars feat. Tandjolo, “Koyile/Nyeka Nyeka”(mp3) | The Kasai Allstars may not live up to the precedent set on the first Congotronicsvolume, but their hypnotic chants and chimes, along with the complete dynamic shift around the three-minute mark, make this one a must-hear on Congotronics 2.
