2009: The year in local pop

By MATT PARISH  |  December 28, 2009

• Magic Magic, "Sleepy Lion"
We're still waiting on the full follow-up to last year's self-released debut, but Magic Magic at least fed us this seven-inch shortly after we named them the "Best New Band in Massachusetts" in our "50 States" survey this past July. This tune flies by like a breezy summer bike ride (oh, summer . . .) upon the weightlessness of breathy, sky-high vocals and a stately cadence of choral doo-bops. The keyboard line and the airline-hangar-echoey drums poke their heads in from a lost Flaming Lips session. If there's more of this up Magic Magic's sleeves, we'll take it as a good omen for the year ahead.
