Meanwhile, Of Montreal are forging ahead into increasingly strange territory. "Kevin is really into trying on different roles," adds Huggins. "For the new record, he's been approaching his singing as if he was a black woman on an R&B record, and he's trying to write totally straightforward #1 Hot 100–radio jams — but, you know, they come out so convoluted and skewed. I think, in his mind, he just wants something that will play right along with, you know, Beyoncé." It may sound beyond unlikely, but if Barnes and company stick to it, stranger things are bound to happen.
