At the Regattabar, the band will be playing material written on a commission from Chamber Music America, as well as pieces from their three albums. But that older material might sound a bit different, since Steckler says that part of his work these days has included dusting off old compositions and tightening them up. "It's a big tendency when you're young to overwrite, and I still fall into that trap a lot. I think I'm a better editor of my compositions."
These days, he adds, there's a lot more room for collective improvisation among the players. "I think the players are happier when I do that. Definitely." The players at the Regattabar will include long-time DCB members Jared Sims and Charlie Kohlhase (saxophones) and Bill Carbone (drums), plus more recent member Terry Goss on sax and Will Slater on bass.
