Bob Marley’s b-day + downcity benefits
By PROVIDENCE PHOENIX MUSIC STAFF  |  February 3, 2010

Former Best Music Poll nominee MIKE GENDRON and uncle PETE GENDRON team up and unplug at the Greenwich Hotel on THURSDAY (the 4th), rocking the lounge free of charge til 12:30 am, call 401.884.4200. Also, Firehouse 13 hosts an 18+ hard-rock lineup featuring Fall River's PISTOL SHOT GYPSY with Boston's LA MOB and locals FREQUENCY CONTROL, call 401.270.1801. On FRIDAY (the 5th), DUKE ROBILLARD and SUNNY CROWNOVER celebrate Tales of the Tiki Lounge, their collaborative CD release, at Chan's in Woonsocket; two sets at 8 and 10 pm, call 401.765.1900. Local alt-rock hippies FAR OFF PLACE hit the Knickerbocker Cafe on Friday, and the revived Westerly hotspot will celebrate Bob Marley's birthday on SATURDAY (the 6th) with help from HOPE ROAD, a Marley tribute band via the woods of Ashaway; call 401.596.4225 for info on both gigs. Two worthwhile benefit shows downtown on Saturday night — start off at Club Hell with a 6 pm show benefiting Lori A. Viens with TOO LATE THE HERO, SLEEP CITY, SHE'S A ROBOT, and THE INTEL ($12 cover). Then head to AS220 (401.831.9327) for a must-see lineup helping out Nicole Reinert, who suffers from a severe disease of the autonomic nervous system. ALEC K. REDFEARN & THE EYESORES lead off around 8:30 pm, followed by HECTOR 3, Pittsburgh's DIRE WOLVES, ARCING (featuring ex-Sweethieves bassist Hilary Jones — hell yes!), and BELLOWS. Bristol's best dive bar, the Common Pub (401.253.9801), hosts COMA COMA, MAMA F, and personal favorite THE DIEPODS, the perfect accoutrement to the $1 Jello shots and 3/$1 cherry bombs. Oh, and no cover all night. Do it. Looking to relax a bit following Stooper Bowl Sunday? If you're not making the journey to NYC for Them Crooked Vultures (I'm counting down the hours), then I implore you to hit AS220 on MONDAY (the 8th) to catch two of Rhody's finest in TALLAHASSEE and DETROIT REBELLION, along with LAST GOOD TOOTH and Brooklyn songstress PEPI GINSBERG. Doors at 9 pm. And on WEDNESDAY (the 10th), the SUPERCHIEF TRIO (with Tom Ferraro on guitar) continue their bluesy residency at Nick-a-Nee's; 21+ and never a cover, call 401.861.7290.
