No, Baker surely knows that the bigot wing of the state GOP wanted a symbolic smearing of queers before they would forgive him for his support of same-sex marriage and his selection of openly gay Tisei for lieutenant governor.
Baker capitulated — just as his mentor Bill Weld did in 2006, when he denounced his prior support for same-sex marriage to appease conservatives while running for governor of New York.
Let this be a lesson to all those — including Tisei, who co-sponsored the transgender bill and is now keeping shamefully silent about Baker’s betrayal — who think that the Republican Party in Massachusetts is moving toward acceptance of the rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender citizens. Given a choice between standing with the LGBT community or kowtowing to the hateful, homophobic party base, Republicans always choose their true friends — and show their true colors.
