Last month was the deadliest yet for coalition forces in the war, with 103 deaths — 59 of them Americans. Roadside bombings have doubled since a year ago, and suicide bombings have tripled, according to a United Nations report.
Anyone who has read that now-infamous Rolling Stone article, or merely followed the Petraeus hearings, must realize that our current strategy will require many more years of engagement, many more hundreds of billions of dollars, and many more deaths and permanent injuries.
We threw away far too much blood and treasure in Iraq because of the unwillingness of leaders in both parties to air honest criticism and doubts. We are doing it again in Afghanistan.
