Thank you for your recent article about the price increase on city trash bags (see "Dumped," by Andrew Steinbeiser, August 20). When I first noticed this at Hannaford this summer, I was disgusted! I live in Kennedy Park where people already leave their trash in plain kitchen trash bags in front of my gate so they don't have to pay for or deal with it. This price increase will only make things worse. Portland city officials will start finding that trash will be everywhere on the streets. People such as myself, barely out of college, can hardly afford $10/roll for trash bags — how do they expect large families with low income to? Expect to see a lot more overflowing Dumpsters. Or if officials say they aren't noticing a problem, maybe we should start leaving our trash on the steps of City Hall?
Thanks again for shedding some light on this!
