Boston road rage ranked

It’s the cow paths, stupid
By DAVID S. BERNSTEIN  |  May 17, 2006

A national “road rage” survey released Tuesday rates Boston as having the fifth most discourteous drivers in the country. Which, frankly, pisses me off. For those of us who drive, we work hard every day to be the worst, most obnoxious, most aggressively selfish drivers possible. And we rank behind Miami, Phoenix, New York, and Los Angeles? Man, am I going to be cutting some people off tonight.

The survey (a 2000-person phoner) considered a number of traits we Bostonians consider ourselves masters of: impatience, speeding, failing to signal, tailgating, cutting over without notice, running red lights, slamming on brakes, honking, cursing, waving fists, and making obscene gestures.

Come on: if you do fewer than three of those going through Leverett Circle, you’re the nicest guy on the road. And you’re probably not going to make it through Leverett Circle.

I refuse to believe we’re more courteous drivers than people in Phoenix (Phoenix!?). Here’s my challenge: let’s put drivers from the top five cities onto five roads leading into a rotary, and see what happens.

On a happier note, we tied for first in the ever important rank of “more likely to curse another driver.” Bastards.
