Speak English!

Bishop Robert E. Farrow, a major community figure in Providence, passed away last week. Bishop Farrow was a big man with an eloquent voice who served on the city's Human Rights Commission and also as education director of the NAACP. The Rev. Donald C. Anderson, executive minister of the Rhode Island State Council of Churches, was quoted in the Other Paper saying that Bishop Farrow was "never afraid to speak up for his faith or some social injustice, he has been a fixture in Rhode Island's faith community for many years. His strong voice for justice will be missed." Rest in peace, Bishop Farrow.

P&J were of the opinion that all that could be said had been said about the "Christmas" vs. "Holiday" tree controversy. But we were not counting on a last-minute message from perennial Vo Dilun political candidate, Chris Young. Thanks to the Interzone, you can see "a film by Chris Young" on the topic. Just go to YouTube and punch in "Rhode Island Christmas Spirit Santa Motorcycle Ride" and behold Mr. Young's attempt to score an Academy Award.

This short film is truly religious in nature — you can tell by the horde of Santas zooming through Westerly on motorcycles. Interspersed with the biker Santas are such seasonal messages as "Chafee and Taveras tried to steal Christmas" and "Rhode Island takes a stand against atheistic communism." It ends with a note that the film was "produced and directed by Chris Young." If that's not a seasonal message you can take to heart, we don't know what is.
