Nice column on Tuesday by BeloJo deputy editorial pages editor, Ed Achorn. Taking a break from his usual political musings, Ed writes about one of his favorite topics, The Beatles. His other fave topic and area of expertise is early baseball and, in particular, Old Hoss Radbourn (Achorn's book Fifty Nine in '84: Old Hoss Radbourn, Barehanded Baseball and the Greatest Season a Pitcher Ever Had is a gem).
Achorn writes admiringly of Paul McCartney's latest CD, Kisses On the Bottom, a collection of tunes by Great American Songbook-types like Harold Arlen and Irving Berlin. Best of all, Sir Paul has featured a new song on the CD, written in the style of these earlier masters, titled "My Valentine."
McCartney performed the song on the Grammy broadcast this week, with able support from Diana Krall on piano and some lovely guitar work by Joe Walsh. It was nice to see that Sir Paul still has the touch when he puts his mind to it. As Jorge's father said when the Beatles performed "Yesterday" for the first time on The Ed Sullivan Show, "Hey, that guy can really sing."
