You may recall, a couple of years back, that then-Governor Donald "The Don" Carcieri was very gung ho about the state offering Curt Schilling's 38 Studios video game company a whopping $75 million in loan guarantees through the Rhode Island Economic Development Corporation.

At the time, P&J were dubious about the deal: Why were Carcieri and Keith Stokes of the EDC so enthusiastic about giving such a large pile of money to one company — a company that hadn't even put out its first product in what is a notoriously capricious industry?

But we were hardly the only naysayers. There were plenty: among them then-gubernatorial candidate Lincoln Chafee and Gina Raimondo, then a candidate for state general treasurer.

It might have been wise to have paid a little more attention to Gina, a successful venture capitalist. But noooo, The Don had far more faith in celebrity, avowed conservative, and fellow-rich-guy Curt Schilling.

Well, as you may have heard, the Lincmeister and the Schilling people have been in talks since 38 Studios failed to make a required $1.125 million payment to the state on May 1, suggesting all is not well at the company.

Oh well, just the latest rich-guy-who-wants-to-live-off-the-public-dole, right, Don?

A VAGINA MONOLOGUE

It seems like we have a pitched battle these days between the GOP and the Catholic Church to see who can best offend, debase, and alienate women.

Both parties have to recognize that women are fleeing their institutions as fast as they can. But apparently, they can't help themselves when it comes to treating the ladies as chattel who must be brought to heel by the demands of their imperious, white, self-proclaimed dominators. "Macho, macho man, I want to be a macho man."

On the US political scene, the GOP is engaged in nothing less than a frontal assault on a woman's right to control her own body. And there's going to be hell to pay, come fall, when our friend the Mittster has to defend the obscene positions he has taken on women's issues.

The party's approach to gay marriage is going to hurt, too. Here's what the GOP fails to recognize: you're not just giving away the gay vote when you trash gay and lesbian dignity. There are many straight people who have gay and lesbian friends and relatives they care about far more than some pol.

On the religious side, it's getting kinky. (There's a surprise, eh, boys and girls?) First, Pope Bennyndejets attacked his own nuns for focusing on social issues like justice and poverty, instead of railing against abortion and those fags who want to get hitched. Maybe, Mr. Red Shoes, your sisters in Christ just don't like to be laughed at. Or maybe they actually believe in the vows they took.

Now, the Catholic hierarchy in America is also going after the Girl Scouts. What happened, Padre, break a tooth on a Samoa cookie?

The US Conference of Catholic Bishops (boyz only, please) has accused the Girl Scouts of some sort of secretive plot to promote abortion and contraception. Well, of course we all know the sub rosa scheme to plant birth control pills in Thin Mints, right?

Rhode Island’s newly-christened Speaker of the House, Rep.
