SPACE Gallery turns 10

The crowd at SPACE had a blast at this one. Air Guitar Nation was one of the quirkier shows, and a stellar example of how SPACE aims to prevent events from being static viewing experiences. After the film came a packed and raucous air guitar competition — and the debut of national air guitar competitor Erin "McNallica" McNally.

FEBRUARY 2008: BLACK MOUNTAIN WITH BON IVER

Bon Iver stole the show from the headlining psych group, who had just been dubbed "Best New Music" by Pitchfork, during this Portland tour stop. Then&ldots;

JULY 2008: BON IVER WITH BOWERBIRDS

Mere weeks after Justin Vernon's famed four-month cabin stint, Bon Iver presented For Emma, Forever Ago at SPACE, the album which would skyrocket the act to fame.

MARCH 2009: SPEECH AND DEBATE

SPACE's inaugural theatrical production! "Sex, Secrets, and Performance-Art Video-Blogging: Speech and Debate," by Stephen Karam, is a tale of teenagers in Oregon finding theatrical catharsis. Phoenix theater reviewer Megan Grumbling wrote: "Sean Mewshaw directs a thrillingly multi-medial production in the first of what I hope will be many theater works presented by SPACE Gallery." It was.

NOVEMBER 2010: SLANT

SLANT is now a regular event at SPACE, but this was the beginning. Inspired by The Moth and coordinated by the Telling Room, SLANT presents community members, writers, and performers telling their stories, sans notes or props, to a live audience.

MARCH 2012: GIRL WALK // ALL DAY

Girl Walk // All Day is an urban dance adventure from director Jacob Krupnick, set to the album All Day by mash-up house DJ Girl Talk. SPACE's take on it incorporated multiple HD projections and provided both seating and dancing room, then culminated the evening with live DJ sets. "The energy and use of space defined a moment that felt uniquely at home at SPACE Gallery," May says.
