Norquist's "Taxpayer Protection Pledge" was essentially a high-level extortion scheme: you sign, or my allies will spend lotsabucks unseating you in the next election. (The fact that many legislators raced to sign it in the first place shows what profiles in courage these egotistical, self-absorbed quislings are.)

But whatever the power of his threat, Grover shouldn't be all that surprised at the mutiny he's facing now. In a country with a divorce rate at about 50 percent, the idea of anyone honoring an oath to do something "'til death do us part" is laughable. But asking fidelity from a politician is like trusting the word of the groom who is squeezing the maid of honor's ass at the altar.

A story first published in the Akron Beacon Journal appeared in the Other Paper this week. It focused on a self-published memoir by Constance Bumgarner Gee, the former wife of ex-Brown University president Gordon Gee.

It is a story of marginalization and disappointment. And it seemed, to these readers, that a lot of Ms. Bumgarner Gee's tribulations had to do with the fact that she is a woman.

When will some people learn to honor and respect women? Phillipe and Jorge have learned much from the women in our lives and we are eternally grateful. But we also believe we need far more women in the public sphere — especially here in Rhode Island.

We need more women to follow in the footsteps of Susan Farmer — a true public-spirited leader who served (and continues to serve) her state with great dignity.

It was wonderful to see Bob Kerr's article in Tuesday's BeloJo on the talented and on-the-rise musician, Joe Fletcher. As you may know, Bob has taken on the duty of writing about the local music scene and we are all the better for this. Bob knows music and he also knows the Rhode Island music community. He will serve that community and its many fans well.

Jorge has seen Fletcher perform a number of times and he is the real deal. He's been on the road for awhile but is back in town and you'll have an opportunity to see Joe and his band, the Wrong Reasons, at the Met in Pawtucket on December 1. Opening for Joe will be Spirit Family Reunion and Samantha Harlow. The show begins at 9 pm (tickets are $8 in advance and $10 day of show) and it's an opportunity to see a star on the rise.

Adopt a Doctor, a Providence organization that supports physicians in several of the poorest African countries, will host its fifth annual Art Auction on December 12 at the Metro Cafe, 101 Dyer Street in Providence, starting at 5 pm.

Jorge once had the honor of being an auctioneer at an Adopt a Doctor art auction (thank you, Ray Rickman). At that event, held at the Mixed Magic Theater at Hope Artiste Village, there was a lot of first-rate art and the bidding was outrageously low. If you're looking to purchase a holiday gift for a friend or family member, this is an ideal place to find something.
